Last night, Guillermo del Toro became the third Mexican director to win the Oscar for Best Director in the last handful of years (the other two are Alfonso Cuáron and Alejandro Iñárritu). After decades of being a fanboy favorite, del Toro finally brought home big trophies in the form of Best Production Design, Best Music, Best Directing, and Best Picture.
Fans all around rejoiced at the victory for del Toro and the rest of the crew for The Shape of Water. One fan and friend of del Toro who went the extra mile in his congratulations is video game producer Hideo Kojima. Del Toro and Kojima recently teamed up to bring the Death Stranding game to the PS4, and using an image from that game (which features del Toro’s likeness), Kojima threw together a quick photoshop.

I, for one, and pretty happy with the wins that del Toro garnered. As mentioned above, he’s always been the darling of passionate fans, but mainstream success hasn’t always been the easiest for him. Admittedly, even I’m not too keen on his work. Between his Hellboy films and Pacific Rim, I see a director who I appreciate more in theory than in practice.
But that’s not to say I don’t appreciate him for the unique vision he brings to the table. In that sense, I could not be happier to see the Academy recognize someone who so proudly steeps himself in genre filmmaking.
