In a new chapter for Korean entertainment on the global stage, Trigger, a 10-episode action thriller produced by Film Company Bidangil Pictures (a subsidiary of K Wave Media), premieres worldwide on Netflix today, July 25. The release marks K Wave Media’s first Netflix original since its groundbreaking listing on the Nasdaq in May 2025, a milestone signaling the company’s growing global ambitions.
A Thriller That Hits Close to Home
At its core, Trigger is a high stakes disaster action series that unfolds amid nationwide panic as illegal firearms suddenly begin appearing throughout South Korea, delivered not through black markets, but by couriers. The series follows two complex protagonists navigating this dangerous new reality: Lee Do, a principled detective played by Through the Darkness star Kim Nam-gil, and Moon Baek, a mysterious figure with his own hidden motives, portrayed by Kim Young-kwang (Somebody).
What follows is a gritty and gripping exploration of justice, morality, and chaos in a society that’s losing its grip. With tight pacing, brutal realism, and ethical gray zones, Trigger sets a new standard for Korean thrillers.
“Korean content has become a global phenomenon on Netflix, consistently ranking among the most-watched series worldwide,” said Ted Kim, CEO of K Wave Media. “The launch of Trigger on Netflix marks a defining moment for us and represents the scale, ambition, and creative edge we’re bringing to audiences worldwide.”
Behind the Firepower
Helmed by Midnight director Kwon Oh-seung and co-directed by Kim Jae-hoon, the series features a standout ensemble cast including Park Hoon, Gil Hae-yeon, and Kim Won-hae. The production team delivers not only cinematic visuals and suspenseful pacing, but also some of the most intense and realistic gun choreography seen in Korean drama to date.
With its urban edge and provocative social commentary, Trigger addresses a subject rarely broached in Korean entertainment the societal impact of widespread firearm availability pushing genre boundaries and delivering thrills with real world weight.
