His Dark Materials casts Metatron in Alex Hassell. The actor’s own bio on United Agents has Hassell listed as playing Metatron in the final season of His Dark Materials. This should be quite an interesting role to depict for the actor, however I don’t want to spoil too much for the non-book readers. Those who have read His Dark Materials, I need not tell you who or what Metatron is, or his ultimate importance to events.
Given that Season 3 of His Dark Materials will likely go into some territory non-book readers might not expect, I want to maintain some surprises. I mean how do you even explain a role like Metatron without some serious spoiler context?
As yet I have not seen Hassell appear in anything. I therefore cannot speak to his suitability for the role. Though, if Christopher Walken was cast, I’d be usure who well he’d do in this role and I’ve seen plenty of him over the years. It’s that weird kind of role, where you need to see how the text is adapted for film to understand.

Either way I expect the role of Metatron to be a substantial one in this final season of the show. Right now I can’t fathom how the showrunners will pull off this final season? I really enjoyed both seasons of the show so far. However even then, things were cut for time. That third book is way, way bigger and more complex than either of the first two books in the series. I had always hoped the show would be given two season for the final book. I also know from quotes that the showrunners wanted the same. Alas, the show was hardly a smashing success. As such we have to be lucky we are even getting a final season.
I love these books and I love the show, despite a few quibbles. However I totally appreciate that as fantasy goes His Dark Materials isn’t blockbuster material. It is however intellectually one of the most challenging fantasy books aimed at children to ever be written in my opinion. In fact, let’s just be honest. If author Phillip Pullman had written this story in 1912, he would probably have been sent to prison for heresy.
