Adapting anything from the page to the screen is a difficult thing for any project. However, it’s especially difficult when you’re dealing with etherial and controversial subjects such as souls and religion. Put it all in the backdrop of a fantastical world and web of narratives and you have His Dark Materials, a trilogy of novels from author Philip Pullman, a series that was given a shot at an adaptation back in 2007 with The Golden Compass.
Given that that movie went down in flames as it did, it’s clear that it’s not as easy as one may think, especially since the story and characters are so well-defined. So, what were the challenges here? In a new featurette, we get to see executive producers Jane Tranter and Jack Thorne discuss the issues in adapting such an ambitious tale.

In the video, Tranter says a great line about the property, that “it’s not about greatness, it’s about goodness. In this particular moment in time, when there is so much trumpeting about greatness, that actually simple acts of goodness that Lyra does, that Roger does, is the way forward for us.”
I think that very much speaks to the spirit of the series, in that it is very much against the bureaucracy inherent in mankind, but is more interested in what the individual can accomplish through internal strength.
Of course, there are a lot of other goodies thrown in there for you who wonder what goes on in the heads of the executive producers.
