His Dark Materials Loses 1.5M Viewers In Second Episode In The U.K.

The streaming wars have begun, and almost within the same time period, we have started the fantasy wars, which has been unofficially kicked off by Amazon Prime Video’s Carnival Row. Now, the next contender to take on the genre is His Dark Materials, the HBO and BBC series that adapts Philip Pullman’s trilogy of the same name.

The first episode of the series boasted 7.2 million viewers, making it the biggest drama launch in British television in around five years, but the real question is if it could hold audiences.

The second episode, “The Idea of the North,” has premiered, and according to Deadline, 5.7 million viewers. While this isn’t half-bad, it is a substantial step down from the first day. What’s more is that some fans are upset at some of the changes made to the source material, which you can read about HERE.

Of course, it’s still too early to tell how the show will fare. Audiences may very well be waiting for a few episodes to pile up before hopping in, and once the verdict is out on whether or not the season is good, they may get another hit of adrenaline.

Either way, I’m happy that the second season has already been greenlit, as it chronicles some of the more interesting stuff in the series to me, and given how Episode 2 handled some of the plot threads that lead into that second book’s plotlines.
