Hobbs & Shaw 2 In Development, Says The Rock — Hopefully It’s Better Than The First

Last year, the Fast & Furious brand expanded. It had its first Vin Diesel-less escapade since 2 Fast 2 Furious. That film was Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Under normal circumstances, this would be a huge risk, but with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham fronting your film, it’s not so bad. The film went on to make $759 million worldwide. It may not have made standard Fast and Furious money, but that’s still well within the realm of profitability — so a sequel seemed pretty darn inevitable, right?

Well, we’ve been waiting for months to hear if that would indeed be the case over at Universal. Now, nearly eight months after the release of the original movie, we’re finally getting word as to the overall status of Hobbs & Shaw 2. The update came courtesy of Johnson himself during a Q&A Instagram.

“We are developing now the next film, the next [Hobbs & Shaw] movie, and I’m pretty excited about it,” Johnson said. “[We] just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.”

So, what does that mean? It means they aren’t too far along in the process, and as Johnson said, they don’t even know what direction the story is going in just yet. As such, it’s unlikely there is any director working on it, and for all we know they have yet to lock down. screenwriter. However, with Fast & Furious 9 now delayed to next year, it’s not like they’re in any big rush.

I’m hoping this means we could actually get a good movie out of this. I enjoy me the Fast & Furious franchise, but I found Hobbs & Shaw to be nigh-unwatchable. And this was from someone who LOVED those trailers. As excited as I was going into the film, by the time we hit the third act, I found my forehead in my hands and my head shaking. The dialogue was terrible, the characters flat, and most offensively, I was bored most of the time.

Perhaps with all this time to work on the script, they can get it right. On the plus side, the first Hobbs & Shaw had Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart popping in. I think utilizing them to create a whole new “Fast Team” would be awesome, and they did seem to be hinting to as much. That being said, there is the little fact that Ryan Reynolds voiced the mysterious big bad. As of this writing, it doesn’t sound like that holds any plot importance, but it could mean they are planning for him to be the series villain, but you never know.

Regardless, you can see this as a confirmation that they’re actively working on a sequel, so that’s good news. Even as someone who didn’t like the first movie, I could see the real potential in the I.P. as a whole. I want to see it succeed.
