The Cannes Film Festival denies offer to stream festival on YouPorn.

The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed a lot of in-person events. For the first time for many festivals, they are either being delayed or outright canceled. One such casualty is the high-profile Cannes Film Festival. While a lot of these movies may be a bit too artsy for most mainstream audiences, the prestige is unrivaled. Some of last year’s big movies, including Parasite, Rocketman, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, screened there. Without a doubt, it is seen as one of the festivals most indicative of modern film industry tastes.

As such, it was a big deal when the Cannes Film Festival itself was delayed in the wake of the pandemic. This, indeed, is a big blow to the festival, and I’m sure a big blow to those filmmakers who had hoped to screen their movies at this prestigious event. However, an unlikely white knight recently emerged to assist in this very serious issue. I’m, of course, talking about the porn site, YouPorn.

Charlie Hughes, the vice president of the adult entertainment site, reached out to the festival runners. 

“We have been closely following the discussion about this year’s Cannes International Film Festival,” Hughes wrote. “And knowing the decision to postpone this year’s was a difficult one, we wanted to offer an alternative that will guarantee and impactful debut for selected films.”

Hughes went on to state how seriously they treat the pandemic and the new reality of social distancing. And then, he dropped the big offer.

“YouPorn would like to formally offer the Cannes International Film Festival an opportunity to stream its feature films and official lineup announcement (scheduled for April 16) in a special section on our site, which is one of the most viewed websites in the world. We have a robust infrastructure already in place for large scale content streaming and would be delighted to help keep this esteemed event on track with its initially planned programming and timing.”

So, what did the Cannes Film Festival say? Well, I have to say, their response was fairly predictable. Of course, there’s the fact that they’d be streaming prestigious and high-brow content on a porn site. But, apart from that, we can’t forget that, as a fairly traditional festival, there’s an emphasis on theatrical screenings and presentation. As such, it was no surprise when they denied the offer.

“We appreciate the prompt reply from Pierre Lescure, President of Cannes Film Festival, on our offer to stream the festival selections on YouPorn’s site,” Hughes wrote in a response. “Even though it breaks our heart that he doesn’t think it’s a good fit, we appreciate the response and want to keep the lines of communication open in case anything changes. We were happy to hear we put a smile on Mr. Lescure’s face during this difficult time.”
