Horizon: Zero Dawn 2 Going Online?

Count me mildly concerned. While I enjoy online games as much as the next guy, the things that really bring me back to my consoles are the amazing single-player experiences. Recent years have seemingly brought that love back. JRPGs like Persona 5 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and open-world games like Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn clinched the deal for me. I selfishly don’t want much online stuff to interfere with my single-player experience.

Now, it looks like that may be changing for the latter of those franchises, Horizon: Zero Dawn, as there are some hints at some multiplayer functionality in the impending sequel. Some eagle-eyed Redditors spotted a position for a Game Server Engineer, which would feature work on “systems like matchmaking, tournaments, clans, and leaderboards.”

This seems to indicate an online element…but does that mean it’s for Horizon: Zero Dawn 2? Not necessarily. They could be returning to standard online multiplayer with a different game, but it’s the job posting above that indicates a Horizon sequel. That job calls for a Senior Game Programmer, and in it, it states they are working on an “epic open-world game.” The damning phrase is that the applicant would preferably have experience in multiplayer.

Of course, you never know. They could be working on multiple games. But with that job for an open-world game seemingly also wanting someone with multiplayer experience, it does seem like they are taking Horizon online.
