Here’s my review of House of the Dragon S3E06 and whilst it had a good start, by the end I was rolling my eyes, again at choices made. Folks this is Spoiler Free, so I won’t get into the weeds on plot details here. Let’s get into it.

Good Start

I actually really enjoyed the opening scene. In some ways this scene is a microcosm of what makes this Universe an interesting one to follow. The lack of movie/TV logic. The scene is set for a character to have a heroic (in their mind) ending, but reality doesn’t work like that and show tells us once again this is not a fairy tale.

Games of Thrones success was based on this and the literature being used a source revels in this area.

So, a great opening scene aside, what about the rest of the episode?

Downward Spiral

Sadly the episode begins a downward spiral from this point on and doesn’t hit rock bottom until the last five minutes. This series has a nasty habit of playing up a big cliff-hanger ending one episode and then making it seem rather inconsequential within the opening moments of the following episode.

What will happen to Allicent and Healena trapped in that secret tunnel? I won’t spoil, but you’ll be thoroughly whelmed. Once again I must highlight that the writing in any scene involving these two characters sems to be written by the office intern. I have no idea what I’m supposed to be observing from a character development point of view. Instead I feel like we are just treading water with these two because the books don’t give them much to do at this point.

There are a few good scenes here and there, and some that just don’t work as well for me. As I have said previously, I feel like there are just too many plot lines and we spend too much time with the ones not working and too little with those that do.

Take out the Vale scenes and the Allicent scenes from this episode and give more time to what else is left and you have a good episode. That’s not what is happening though and like Season 2, the quality of the episodes is dropping every week from the opening towards the finale. At least, that’s the trend so far in my reviews and it went that way in Season 2 also.

Eye Roll

We end the episode on a real low point for the series for me. It does involve Allicent and I’ll say no more due to spoilers. It’s not something that’s in the books and unless they are dramatically changing the fate of certain characters in the book, we know it won’t lead anywhere specificaly.

It’s just not something that works for any of the character we are following. It makes Rhaenyra seems stupid beyond any argument and makes Allicent feel like a cardboard cut out rather than a real person making choices.

Fact is, I really don’t care where this story is going, I have little care where Aemond’s current story is going but they are trying to make his and Daemon’s stories mirrors of one another, for some reason I’m not picking up. I’d also be happy to have no more Vale until something actually happens.

I think I know what the finale will be and it leaves so much left to happen in the final Season that it will feel rushed.

GRADE: C

Good start, then slowly gets worse until I was rolling my eyes at the end. House of the Dragon is decent TV with a great TV budget. Season 1 was the target and so far both Season 2 and Season 3 have failed to live up to that promise. Both seasons having the trend of starting well and spiralling down as the Season progresses.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a good final two episodes to reverse this trend. Truth is, the writers on House of the Dragon just aren’t delivering in the way they think they are with far too many subplots.
