How Editing Terminator: Dark Fate Differed From Alita: Battle Angel

Yeah, I know. Terminator: Dark Fate and Alita: Battle Angel aren’t really movies that you would put together, but at the end of the day, these were both projects produced by James Cameron, one of the masters of blockbuster cinema. As such, it would make sense to compare them to each other on some level, especially since they both featured high-profile directors in their own right.

In the case of Alita, it was Robert Rodriguez, and in the case of Terminator, it was Tim Miller. When asked by CinemaBlend whether or not there were any disagreements between him and Miller while editing Dark Fate, Cameron said:

“I would say many. And the blood is still being scrubbed off the walls from those creative battles. This is a film that was forged in fire. So yeah, but that’s the creative process, right? I mean, my work with Robert on Alita was very different. Robert loved the script, loved everything, said, ‘I just want to make this movie. I want to make the movie the way you see it.’ I was like, ‘No, you got to make it your movie.’ I had the reverse experience with Tim, which is Tim wanted to make it his movie. And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I kind of know a little about this world.’ So I had the matter and the anti-matter version of that producorial experience.”

I love the difference in dynamic between him and his filmmakers, and in both cases, you ended up with products that largely seemed to work with critics, even if they weren’t perfect.
