How Star Wars Author Timothy Zahn Envisioned The Sequel Films

Not a fan of how the past two Star Wars films have managed to kill off some pretty major characters? You’re not alone. As many fans have made clear, a lot of folks have some real beef with the way Lucasfilm has been handling their property, and while there is a myriad of reasons why, one of the problems has to do with the killing off of said characters — at least for some fans.

Interestingly enough, Timothy Zahn, who wrote such Star Wars novels as the recent Star Wars: Thrawn, is in agreement with those fans, and doesn’t believe that killing off major characters is the way to go with the franchise, as he revealed to Syfy Wire:

“My philosophy before the sequels came out was that Star Wars was not the kind of thing where you killed off major characters. My logic on that one being if that was, we kill off major characters, either Wedge or Lando would not have survived the second Death Star [in Return of the Jedi]. It always seemed to me, this is the type where the heroes get into danger and you have to, they have to figure out a way out of it that you’ll be happy at the end.”

Perhaps the most interesting part of his statements regarding this is his vision for the sequel films. The movies under Kennedy saw a mostly-new and mostly-unrelated cast of characters take the lead, but Zahn’s take would skew more closely to the old characters:

“My vision always for the sequels would be, you would pick up with the children of our main characters. [The original cast] would be the elder statesman type and not necessarily die on camera. They’d be off doing beekeeping like Sherlock Holmes allegedly did. You don’t have to kill off a character to get them offstage.”

What do you think of this comments? Do you agree that the original cast should have remained alive in these movies? Sound off down below!
