How Wheel Of Time Showrunner Is Still Working On Series In Spite Of COVID-19 Shutdown

Wheel Of Time Teaser Trailer

The Wheel of Time was deep into production until recently. I don’t think I need to tell you why, but like many productions, it was halted, bringing things to a standstill. This is a big series that is set to capitalize on the age of fantasy we’re diving headfirst into. So far, we’ve already seen Carnival Row, His Dark Materials, and The Witcher carry the baton from Game of Thrones. However, Wheel of Time could very well be the biggest one of the bunch.

Based on the Robert Jordan-penned series of the same name, this is a series that has amassed millions of fans over its 14-book run. Needless to say, there’s a lot riding on this. But in spite of the production halt, showrunner Rafe Judkins is keeping quite busy. Judkins recently did a Q&A over his Instagram Stories, and while on there, he discussed the process and how he’s keeping the ball rolling (via Tor.com).

In this project, production and post-production are being done simultaneously. Before the coronavirus shut everything down, they would prep two episodes while they were shooting two episodes and doing post-production work on four episodes. Additionally, they were writing Season 2 at the same time.

This is a hell of a lot of work at once. While I have no idea how one would juggle all these stages of production at once, there is quite the silver lining here. Now that work is halted on pre-production and production, there is still plenty of time to work on the other two aspects. That is exactly what he’s doing. Presently, he is working on the VFX for the filmed episodes and on Season 2 through a remote writer’s room.

It really is likely how far into the process they were at this stage. While there’s no doubt that this production halt will cause a delay, the fact they can at least continue to polish what’s in the can and lay the groundwork for the season to come is reassuring. Once this whole thing passes, they’ll likely be in pretty good shape to continue on, and Season 2 could very well have more attention placed on it than it would otherwise.
