How Zack Snyder Helped James Wan With Aquaman

Even though director Zack Snyder is done with the DCEU, his influence still echoes through its films. The most recent entry into the universe is Aquaman. Fllowing in the footsteps of Wonder Woman, as far as being both well received and a financial success, the films are doing their best to rebrand the DCEU as something cool.

Actor Neil Daly, who handled the screenings for Aquaman revealed on the Fire and Water Podcast, that Snyder helped bring Aquaman back to what he had originally envisioned for the character, as during Justice League, Josh Whedon is said to have implemented much of the adolescant humor that was  in the Justice League that was absent in Aquaman. You can check out what Daly had to say below.

We could have gotten a whole movie about Aquaman basically fawning over Mera the whole time and making all kinds of dirty jokes and things like that and they really had to get away from that, which is all what Whedon had done, so Snyder had a little bit of an influence on Aquaman. James Wan was showing Zack Snyder – against the studio’s wishes – cuts of the movie and early test screenings and storyboards to make sure that they’re on the same page with what he originally wanted and Snyder gave his blessing of approval, bringing it back to what he wanted all along.

Overall, I liked Snyder’s vision for the DCEU, however, the execution came up short for the most part. Snyder is known for his visually stunning shots, not his storytelling, which I why I think the use of a co-director that focused on story would have done wonders for both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League

Things are looking up for the DCEU, still by no means on the level of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but with Shazam! around the corner (looks good right?), Birds of Prey in the works, and perhaps most interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix’s turn as the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips upcoming, Joker, us fans can only hope that DC has finally found their groove.
