A second trailer has just hit for the Hugh Jackman-starring original musical, The Greatest Showman. Check it out above!
The synopsis for the film is below:
“Inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.”
The Greatest Showman is directed by Michael Gracey from a screenplay from Jenny Bicks (Rio 2) and Bill Condon (director of Beauty and the Beast). The film stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. The film also notably features original songs from the Academy Award-winning lyricists of La La Land, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul.
On the whole, this film looks to be a great piece of glossy and melodramatic storytelling. Does it look cheesy and whitewashed (and by whitewash, I mean the whitewashing of content, not in casting)? Oh yeah. But in addition to having a pretty catchy song, it also looks to have the emotional subtlety of a sledgehammer, and while that doesn’t always work in film, in the context of a musical, it’s something I personally tend to give more leeway.
