According to original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hulu has cancelled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot series, before it even began. It’s been years now where there is talk of Joss Whedon’s Buffy getting a modern reboot. Up until recently original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t interested in any return. However, the most recent reboot attempt actually got Gellar involved and reprising her role as Buffy.
It looked as if all systems were go. However, Gellar has now announced on her Instagram that Hulu has cancelled the series. So Buffy is back to being pretty much dead and buried again. Check it out via Discussing Film below.

“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
“I want to thank Chloé Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you.”

One can only assume that Hulu were not happy with the end result. I’m not certain, but I have a feeling a pilot might have been shot, perhaps it did not go well? Either that or it was passed just before production could begin.
It seems unlikely that someone else is going to pitch up now with more cred than the Zhao/Gellar team up. My guess is, it’ll be another generation before there’s any chance of a new revival.
Who knows if it would have been good or not? I’d certainly rather it was left as opposed to a bad reboot, but we may never know? What do you think of the news that Hulu has cancelled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot? Thoughts below as always.
