Mexican Gothic is getting the Hulu treatment.

Hulu is turning to the big novel hit of July for one of their next big limited series. This past month or so saw the release of the historical fantasy novel Mexican Gothic. The book is written by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, author of last year’s Gods of Jade and Shadow, which was another Mexico-set fantasy. Mexican Gothic is being branded as a “feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy,” and is now being adapted for the small screen.

Producing the new drama series are Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos and their Milojo Productions. They are producing in tandem with ABC Signature, who they have a deal with. As someone who is eager to see more diversity on the small screen, this is fantastic news. And as someone who enjoys gothic fantasy stories such as The Angel’s Game, Mexican Gothic feels right up my alley.

The novel follows socialite Noemí Taboada, who receives a letter from her newlywed cousin. Her cousin, Catalina, is not well, and pleads for Noemí to come and rescue her from her husband, who she fears is poisoning her. Add in visions of ghosts haunting the ancient mansion, an aging patriarch, and a shy boy with potential secrets to a family mystery, and you have a story ripe for adapting.

Moreno-Garcia will also serve as executive producer of the series along with Ripa, Consuelos, and Albert Bianchini.

“We feel like we hit the literary jackpot, and cannot wait to bring Silvia’s gorgeous writing to life, together with Hulu,” Ripa said.

“I am excited to see the novel come to life and to meet the talented, diverse crew and cast members that will take us on this journey,” Moreno-Garcia said.

I don’t know about you, but I need to push this novel up my reading list. Adaptation or not, this seems like an intriguing tale worth diving into.
