The Djinn isn’t that singing genie that grants wishes and saves the day.

IFC Midnight got the North American rights to The Djinn from the breakout directing team of David Charbonier and Justin Powell.

The Djinn follows a mute, young boy, who unleashes a sinister monster after he makes a wish to fulfill his greatest desire: to have a voice. Now trapped in a small apartment with nowhere to hid, Dylan must find a way to survive until the stroke of midnight or pay the ultimate price.

This film stars Ezra Dewey, Rob Brownstein, and Tevy Poe.

“David Charbonier and Justin Powell have wasted no time in making their mark in the genre film community, bringing a potent intensity to screens with the debut of two features within a year,” said Arianna Bocco, president of IFC Films, in a statement. “We are beyond excited to unleash their bold and layered vision to audiences with The Djinn and have them join IFC Midnight’s proud history of emerging talent.”

Charbonier and Powell made their directorial debut on the festival circuit last year with The Boy Behind the Door. That film premiered at Fantastic Fest and AFI Fest to rave reviews. This horror-thriller is about two friends who were kidnapped and taken to a strange house in the middle of nowhere. One managed to escape but tries to go back to the house to save his best friend.

“We made this story to test what we could do with limited resources, but as we developed the film it become something special to us,” stated Charbonier and Powell in a statement.

IFC Midnight plans for the release of The Djinn on May 14 later this year in select theaters and On Demand.
