I’m A Bit Worried About The MCU Multiverse – Are You? | Friday Free Talk

According to recent reports, the SAG-AFTRA strike talks are not going as well as hoped.

The MCU Multiverse is coming, and to begin with I was all for it. However as time goes by, I can’t also help get a little worried about it all and I wondered if anyone else felt the same way? Recently there has been enough concrete stories mixed with rumors to suggest that former Sony Spider-Man characters are being re-introduced through the Multiverse. Not only that, but we could be getting alternate versions of some original MCU characters?

Now, whilst it sounds kinda fun for a one-off movie, this does not sound much like a one-off movie to me. When Sony’s own movies are involved and potentially linking into the MCU, it worries me. So let’s explore the potential scenarios and see what’s what shall we?

The Sony Experience

Now, if this was a multiverse Marvel were building which excluded the Sony movies, then I’d be less worried. Here’s the thing. I love the MCU, I did not like the Sony Spider-Man movies. I also have zero interest in seeing the current VenomVerse added to the larger MCU. Some fans will have fond memories of the Sam Raimi Spidey movies, not this fan.

And when it comes to Sony’s ASM movie’s, I have been less interest. I thought DeHann’s Harry/Goblin and Fox’s Electro were horrible. That’s why those movies failed and Spider-Man ended up in the MCU to begin with. So reports of DeHaan coming back as well as confirmation that Foxx is back as Electro, they give me the fear. Further, the fact that Morbius features Adrian Toomes and Tom Hardy keeps hinting at a Venom/Spider-Man crossover worries me even more.

I don’t trust Sony as a studio, it’s that simple. And whilst I do trust Marvel Studios, I don’t trust Sony to do what they tell them. Which leaves me back at square one.

Diluting the MCU

I’m worried that the MCU becomes diluted by the Sony VenomVerse. Sure, if Marvel Studios are producing films then I have faith. However I don’t see Marvel Studios having any input into Sony’s own movies like Venom 2. It might seem like a fun idea to have a live-action Spider-Verse movie for Spider-Man 3. But if the trade off for that movie is having the VenomVerse full integrated with the MCU, but controlled by Sony, I’ll pass.

I’d have been quite happy with Spider-Man 3 dealing with a non Multiverse story. I know Doctor Strange is going into the Multiverse of Madness. But does the entire MCU have to go this way as well. Yes, DC are going down this path, and I hope it works. However DC so far has failed to get a fully integrated universe of the ground. Marvel already had that, so why the desire to suddenly link everything Marvel together.

I really don’t care about Sony’s characters. I care about this version of Spider-Man in the MCU. I’m not sure I want an MCU multiverse? If the MCU becomes diluted by Sony’s pooer quality then I’m not prepared to trade that off as a fan. I could live without Spider-Man in the MCU before hand after all. Do I want Spider-Man and all his characters in the MCU, absolutely. However I’m only interested if Marvel Studios is the ones calling the shots. Sony has made too many mistakes over too many years for me to get excited about anything they have a hand in

The Final Word

Ultimately, I sincerely hope I’m wrong. I hope my colleagues all say, told you so when the MCU Multiverse is a success. But hope doesn’t assuage my fears. My only hope is that this whole Multiverse thing is a temporary situation. That we end up back with a more solid and contemporary MCU by the time it’s all said and done.

That’s a lot of hoping and wishing. That’s not a place I’ve been for some time with the MCU. I just don’t want Marvel to jump the shark like Star Wars did. I have faith in Kevin Feige, I have none in Sony Pictures, none at all.
