Indiana Jones Series Coming To Disney+

It looks like there’s an Indiana Jones series coming to Disney+. That’s what Variety are reporting, and they say an Indy show is in active development. One might be rather surprised by this given that Harrison Ford is 80 and has indicated Indy 5 will be his last outing. However Ford has also reiterated that he is the only one who will play Indy, so what gives? Well, thing is, Variety doesn’t even know yet. Here’s what they had to say.

Disney is actively looking to develop an Indiana Jones TV show for Disney+, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

The Mouse House and Lucasfilm have specifically been bringing up the possibility of a streaming show set in the world of the globe-trotting archaeologist in general meetings with writers of late, sources say. They are still looking for a writer to take on the project, thus no plot details are available. Given that, it is unknown if a series would serve as a prequel to or spin-off of the film franchise, or if it would tie into the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film, similar to how Disney has tied its Marvel shows on Disney+ into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So in other words, a show is being developed but they have no clue on the details yet. There are several possibilities that do not involve Ford. For a start we already had a reasonably popular Young Indiana Jones series back when I was younger. That show was fairly historically accurate and as such I remember getting to watch it in school. However that series did kinda cover Indy’s younger days already, so….. If Lucasfilm were to go down a prequel root, then would that not mean recasting Indy, like Ford said wouldn’t happen? Or, does that only count for adult Indy?

They could also be looking at a spin-off using other characters. A Short Round focused show starring Ke Huy Quan would be loved by fans, I think. Equally perhaps some of the new characters introduced in Indy 5 could be involved? However until we see how Indy 5 leaves things, it’s hard to speculate too much. Therefore despite being a big fan of the Indiana Jones movies, I’m not ready to get excited by this just yet. If this was announced in 1991, and starring Ford, it would be a different story. However for now, I’ll wait and see. What was always clear, was that Lucasfilm was going to look to resurrect the Indy franchise after they were purchased by Disney, it’s one of their most bankable IP’s. Please keep away from Jar Jar Abrams and we should be okay thanks Disney.

What do you think about an Indiana Jones series coming to Disney+? Are you trepidatious like me, or enthusiastic about this news? As always, leave any thoughts below.
