Is Former Indiana Jones 5 Writer Welcoming James Mangold As Director?

Yesterday gave us some pretty big Indiana Jones news. I’m sure you have all heard, or read by now that Steven Spielberg is no longer directing Indiana Jones 5. The famous filmmaker will remain as producer on the movie, but right now no director has been set. We do know that the rumor mill has James Mangold as the top contender to come in as director. There’s nothing official on that front though.

Then, after this Indy news broke, we got a social media reaction from screenwriter Jon Kasdan. Kasdan, at one point, was writing the screenplay for Indy 5, though it appears to be back in the hands of David Koepp for the moment. That being said, Kasdan reacted to the rumor about James Mangold below.

So I guess the question is…does Kasdan know Mangold is definitely in or is he simply reacting to the rumor and giving a thumbs up? The latter is more likely, especially given the fact that I don’t think Kasdan is currently very involved with this movie. For all we know, Kasdan’s pass was thrown out completely and that’s why they went back to David Koepp, who penned the first draft.

I suppose I’ll answer my own question in the title, or try. I’d guess that Kasdan is just giving his approval as he feels like Mangold would be a good choice for the movie. As for whether Mangold is a good choice or not, that’s debatable. In fact, those of us here at LRM have been discussing this since the story broke.

I think you are due to get two very different views over the next few days. So far, we already have James Burns pro-Mangold editorial, you can find that in the related section above. I do believe Nick Doll is of the opposite view that Indy isn’t the same without Spielberg. He should be telling you why later this week as well.

I’ll sit on the fence with this one. I don’t honestly know what I want from Indy 5. I do know I want a far better movie than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and I also feel like Spielberg was as much to blame for KOTCS as anyone else involved with that fairly horrible movie. So I’ll wait and see what we get and judge things from there. After all, for the moment, Mangold is merely a rumor. All we know is that Spielberg will not be directing Indy 5.

What do you think of all this Indy 5 drama, is Mangold a good choice, or should they be pushing for Spielberg once again? Let us know what you think below as always.
