Is Lucasfilm Finally Going To Leave The Bay Area For Burbank?

Lucasfilm

In what is a surprise to me Lucasfilm still operates out of the Letterman Digitial Arts Center located in the San Francisco Presidio. Here they house and operate all Lucasfilm divisions. Except for Skywalker sound that still operates out of Skywalker Ranch. Being how important they are to Disney, it is interesting that they still operate about six hours away from Burbank where Disney is headquartered. But it looks like that might change very soon.

In what would be a move to improve efficiency, according to Star Wars News Net, multiple sources have told them that Disney is moving closer to fulfilling their long-held plans to relocate all of Lucasfilm to Burbank. The current buildings for Lucasfilm and their divisions are actually owned by George Lucas.  Disney has been paying him rent for both of those locations. This is something that they want to stop.

One source told them that, “Disney wants to move Lucasfilm to Burbank. The larger incentive is that they have been paying George Lucas rent for eight years and don’t want to anymore. There is no reason to keep Lucasfilm six hours away from Disney while paying rent to do it.”

Fox May Not Have Been Able To Survive Without Disney Acquisition, Says Analyst

The move down south for Lucasfilm apparently has been the plan for years. It is unknown what has been the delay in getting them down to Burbank. The goal was to have all of their divisions at convenient proximity to Disney headquarters. With that, they cut down distance and they no longer have to pay Lucas rent.

Honestly, I thought that they had moved down south already. The fact that they are still in the Bay Area with all the Star Wars projects they currently are working on is puzzling. I think with Disney trying to pinch every penny possible, they could be looking to make this move sooner rather than later.
