Is Marvel Studios’ Rumored Search For ‘Alison Brie-Type’ She-Hulk A Good Or Bad Idea?

Alison Brie she-hulk

With Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk series headed toward production later this year, rumors and speculation are circulating the web as to who could play the character. Who can embody Jennifer Walters for mainstream audiences in the best way? We here at the site are partial to Naomi Scott, but a lot of other fans across the web are hoping to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz take on the role.

Sadly, if you are on Team Beatriz, the actress already dashed fans’ hopes with a silly thing called “scheduling realities.” Beatriz herself confirmed as much on her Twitter account — all while admiring the arms on a fan-made image of her as the green superhero.

“But like
how do I get my arms to actually look like this. Can someone give me a plan or something?
(Also, I think this show starts shooting in August and I’m unavailable because we’re shooting season 8 of Brooklyn 99 at that same time. But still I’m serious about the arms)”

So, while Beatriz is likely out of the question…who else can we be looking at? Well, scooper Daniel Richtman took to his Patreon to share some tidbits regarding the casting of She-Hulk. According to him, GLOW star Alison Brie was at the top of the studio’s list for the role. That being said, it doesn’t sound like they’re completely closed off to the idea of someone else, and are just interested in an “Alison Brie-type.” What that means is not really clear.

But is this the right way to go for the character? I mean, in my opinion, the acting chops are the most important part of a character and the look is relatively secondary. Does she look like she can play a Jessica Walters type? Sure. I know there are many of you who think the actress should be more muscular in nature, and with production this close there wouldn’t be a lot of “bulk-up” time for anyone.

I understand the concern, but point to my previous statement about acting being the top concern. As Brie has proven many times over, she can act pretty darn well. From her comedic performances in Community and GLOW, it’s also clear she has the funnies to make the character work (and comedic skills is something the studio is looking for). And speaking of GLOW, she undoubtedly has already put it in a lot of work at the gym for that wrestling-based show, so she’d have a solid base for the more physical aspects of the character.

And let’s be real. It’s not like She-Hulk is always portrayed as super buff.

What do you think of Brie Larson taking on the role of Jennifer Walters? If not her, then who do you see as the perfect actor to bring the character to life? Let us know your thoughts down below!
