Is Ron Perlman Ringing The Death Knell For HELLBOY III?

Fans of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy series have long wished to see a third film. You can count Hellboy himself amongst those fans, as star Ron Perlman has attempted to get a threequel off the ground for some time. He famously even attempted to create an online movement last year, asking fans to get #HellboyIII trending worldwide so that the studio would be persuaded by all of the interest in the film. Perlman also kept the Hellboy flame alive a couple of years ago when he donned the iconic makeup and answered an ill boy’s Make-A-Wish in a clip that quickly went viral.

If Perlman’s latest comments on a Hellboy III are any indication, though, the film is on ice indefinitely.

We don’t talk about that anymore,” the actor told ScreenRant at New York Comic-Con, when asked if he and longtime collaborator del Toro still actively discuss a Hellboy III. When asked why the film has fallen off their radar, Perlman honestly answered, “Because he’s busy, and I’m busy. Maybe one day he’s going to call and say, ‘Hey, let’s do it.’ But for right now? We’re happy discovering new worlds to conquer.

So it sounds like Perlman has moved on from trying to rally the troops for a Hellboy III, and is instead adopting a “Maybe someday” approach. For now, the actor is busy promoting Trollhunters and working on his Amazon Prime series Hand of God

Something I found interesting, during a recent appearance by Perlman on the WTF Podcast with Marc Maron, was how much he adores del Toro. I actually didn’t know how close the two were, and I thought it began with 2004’s Hellboy. Turns out they have a history that goes back to 1993’s Cronos. He credits del Toro as one of his greatest allies and one of the foundational pillars in his life. It was refreshing to hear about their deep bond.

Maybe one day del Toro will give him that call, and maybe one day Perlman will get his wish to “end the trilogy” that he feels he and the fans “earned.” But for now, at least, Hellboy III is nowhere on the horizon.
