Is The ‘Streaming Wars’ Narrative A False One?

Begun the Streaming Wars have. That’s the narrative we’ve been pushing for a couple of years now. Netflix has always been preparing for the inevitable moment when content owners would create their own services, effectively leaving them out to dry. This is why the streaming giant has spent billions and billions in original content. It’s all in hopes of retaining subscribers and maintaining growth as the competition continues to stiffen.

But is this narrative actually true? I know many of us consumers have also expressed our annoyance of having too many streaming services. We all assumed it would lead to an inflection point where the market would correct itself again, weeding out the “losers” and leaving us at a sort of equilibrium. Well, BOM’s Dan Salmon doesn’t think this is necessarily the case.

“We continue to believe the ‘streaming wars’ narrative is false and there will be multiple winners in global streaming,” he wrote in a note (via Variety).

Seemingly backing up that claim is a new report from Ampere Analysis (via TheWrap), which seems to support that stream fatigue may be overblown. According to them, in the U.S., 39% of the 22,000 respondents were paying for more than three streaming services as of midway through 2019. This is 6% higher than the year before.

With more services launching last year, and more on the way, that figure is expected to go up. In fact, each year has seen a marked increase, with 2015 showing 10% of respondents having more than three services.

So, in spite of our complaints, it sounds like consumers are willing to pay for more services than they let on. I’m also guilty of that, as I alone have five services. But what about you? Do you think this whole Streaming Wars deal has been much ado about nothing? Let us know down below!
