Exclusive Clip: Director Pedro Almodovar on Musical Influences for Pain and Glory

Spanish film Pain and Glory is receiving plenty of recognition during the award season. It earned an Oscar nod for actor Antonio Banderas for Best Actor on his portrayal of the sufferings of a director. The film is also nominated at the Academy Awards for Best International Film.

Banderas’ performance is a whirlwind act, in which you’ll laugh and cry at his happiness and suffering throughout the film.

Pain and Glory tells a series of re-encounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films.

The film also stars Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Navas, Julieta Serrano, and Penelope Cruz. It is directed by Pedro Almodovar.

The Blu-ray/DVD package includes a Q&A feature with director Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas on the creative process and genesis of Pain and Glory. There is also a feature called “Pedro Almodovar: In His Own Words” about his visual style, early inspirations, and lengthy collaborations with Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz.

LRM Online is exclusively premiering a clip from the feature “Pedro Almodovar: In His Own Words.” In this clip, Almodovar talks about the musical influences of the film. The original score for the film was developed by Alberto Iglesias.

Pain and Glory will be available on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow with the digital release currently available today.
