IT Runtime Revealed — What It Means For The Film

How long will a film be? It’s shocking how much time is spent dissecting and analyzing that very question, but it’s fair to say that it can be very revealing. Depending on the source material (if there is any), it can show how much time the filmmakers are spending delving into certain aspects of the story, and depending on the material, audiences like us can decide if it’s enough time to serve the material justice.

With a film like Stephen King’s IT, this is especially important. The source material is dense, and the book easily cracks 1,000 pages in length in virtually every edition of publication. This means that no matter which way you slice it, there’s a whole lot of material to adapt. Luckily for us, the filmmakers have already done the right thing in breaking the narrative into two parts — part one is set to follow the Losers Club as kids, and part two is set to follow them as adults. With that in mind, they’re already helping to streamline the narrative in the upcoming film. But given all that goes down in this time period, there still a lot to cover.

So how long will IT be? According to the British Board of Film Classification, the movie will be 135 minutes long. That works out to around two hours and 15 minutes in length, which is actually a pretty solid runtime. It’s long enough that it will be able to get into the deep details it needs to, but not so long that it puts a strain on audiences’ bladders.

Plus, since they won’t be cutting back and forth between past and present, as they did in the novel, they really are allowed to tell the story in a more straightforward manner that will help to reduce the runtime. Plus, when all said and done, if the second film manages to come in at around the same length, that will mean the entire adaptation of the novel is about four and a half hours — which is a substantial amount for any book, no matter its length.

What do you think of the runtime. Is it enough to delve into the kids’ stories? Should it be shorter? Let us know your thoughts down below!

IT hits theaters on September 8, 2017.
