It’s Morphin Time… Again! Are You Ready For A Power Rangers Shared Universe?

Power Rangers Shared Universe

I have a lot of really cool geeky tattoos including, four from Final Fantasy, a half-sleeve from FLCL, another half-sleeve made up of TMNT and Ghostbusters, and a totally awesome Star Wars one. I also have ideas for future tattoos, including one for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It may also incorporate Voltron into a really awesome classic Mecha tat. The point is, I am mostly excited for a Power Rangers shared universe. Mostly…

What’s Coming

What the hell am I going on about? A THR report expands on the knowledge of a Power Rangers film reboot from End of the F***ing World creator, Jonathan Entwistle, and tells us that he will also be running a shared universe that includes film and television. The franchise is being brought to us by eOne, a production company Hasbro picked up in 2019. Their Film President, Nick Meyer, and Global Television President, Michael Lombardo, had this to say about the project(s):

“Jonathan has an incredible creative vision for this iconic and hugely successful franchise, and is hands down the right architect to join us as we reimagine the television and film worlds of this property. Across our slate, we are looking forward to working with the most talented storytellers as we take on Hasbro’s rich fan-favourite brands and build entertainment universes around them.”

The Grid

They speak of reimagining the TV and film worlds of Power Rangers and that means anything is possible. While it’s (most likely) a safe bet the tried and true Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be involved in some way, we may actually see multiple teams of Rangers. Boom! Comics’ ongoing book has been amazing in the past. It’s first three-year arc, Shattered Grid, was some of the best storytelling I’ve seen in comics in a long time. It could easily provide a backdrop for this shared universe. honestly, I’d be really happy to see this.

Oddly enough, a few days ago I tweeted at the writer for Shattered Grid about it being adapted. Kyle Higgins replied:

So, there is that. It doesn’t mean we’re not getting it, but it doesn’t make it a sure thing either. Higgins gave no indication of what may be “much cooler” than an adaptation of the epic event. I stand by my hopes and dreams.

Entwistle had this to say about his shiny new toys:

“This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans. We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success.”

As with his bosses, he’s not giving a lot away here. The comment about bringing the Rangers to new and old fans could see multiple teams of Rangers being involved. This would fit with Shattered Grid too.

The Loss

The real shame here is that we’ll never get a sequel to the absolutely delightful Power Rangers (2016) movie. The film starred Darce Montgomery and Naomi Scott, amongst others, as Jason and Kimberly. It provided a character-rich story that managed to create deep lore and deep characters at the same time. Unfortunately, the look of the Rangers and their Dino-Zords was less than desirable. This, and what I feel is a failure to advertise correctly, created a perfect storm of wariness and unawareness about the film. Oh well, let’s hope what comes next is even better.

What do you think of a shared Power Rangers Universe? What age group do you hope it’s aimed at? Let us know in the comments below!
