It’s been a good while since we’ve had a good Jackie Chan flick — at least stateside. As one of the best known martial artists and stunt performers in the business, he was an actor a lot of geeks grew up watching. His popularity hit new heights in the late 1990s with films like Rush Hour, which mixed comedy with his trademark action, but with the exception of maybe the Kung Fu Panda films, the only time I’ve really seen him in a Hollywood movie may be The Karate Kid back in 2010.
His next film comes in the form of an action thriller from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. The film is called The Foreigner, and it’s especially interesting because it shows Chan in a lot more serious light than we’ve seen him in an American film recently.
The trailer shows him as a grieving father in England, who is out for blood after his daughter is killed in an explosion. He goes to great lengths to bring the killers to justice, and it looks like he may have a lot more experience in crime and murder than anyone initially thought.
Here is the synopsis for The Foreigner:
“The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller from the director of Casino Royale.
“The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism.
“In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.â€
