I’m very confused about what direction The Matrix 4 is taking this franchise, and let me clear, that’s no bad thing. We seem to have some members of the cast being replaced and some reprising their roles from the previous three movies. The rumor is that Morpheus will be replaced with a younger actor, yet we know both Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves are set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. Then yesterday we found out that Neil Patrick Harris has signed on for the movie (I’m guessing as an agent, but who knows?)
Today we have news from the ever-reliable Deadline that Jada Pinkett Smith is in negotiations to reprise her role as Niobe in the fourth Matrix movie. It certainly doesn’t appear to be a done deal yet, but one would think Smith would be keen to reprise one of her biggest film roles yet?
Again, I say it’s confusing that Niobe would return ‘as is’ whereas Morpheus would be replaced with a younger actor, rumored to be Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, we have zero clue as to where this movie is going and considering that both Neo and Trinity were dead at the end of The Matrix: Revolutions, Niobe coming back is perhaps less of a surprise.

It’ll be interesting to see if somehow Lana Wachowski can recapture the lightning in a bottle that was The Matrix, because the sequels were in most fans’ minds, (me included) not actually very good movies. Lana Wachowski directs the movie and is co-writing the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, with Grant Hill producing.
