Jai Courtney Says The Suicide Squad Will Be A “Different Flavor”

There really is not much information regarding the upcoming The Suicide Squad. We do know that the film has a release schedule of August 6, 2021 and some casting, and minor character updates, but information has been few and far between. If you are like myself, you will take any type of news that comes our way! Recently the returning Captain Boomerang himself, Jai Courtney, spoke about how The Suicide Squad is a “different flavor” from the original.

A Reboot…Kind Of

For some time fans were not sure if the film would be a complete reboot or a sequel. We now know that it is more of a slight reboot, keeping some connections to the previous film. Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) are all returning from the original. While many of the characters from the first film are doing a line change to make way for other squad members, mystery still surrounds who exactly will be in the squad. Aside from character swaps, the other major change is from former director David Ayer to James Gunn.

“A Different Flavor”

We know there are major differences between Ayer and Gunn, so it is not a big surprise that Jai Courtney describes The Suicide Squad as “a different flavor”. He feels that Gunn has his own unique take regarding Suicide Squad and combining that with the new characters will make for a fresh, fun experience for the audience. I think the shift to Gunn is what the film needs seeing his success with the Guardians of The Galaxy films. This doesn’t mean that Ayer is a bad director, but this seems like the type of film that fits Gunn’s directing style.

Scene Reveal

While Courtney could not provide too many details, he was able to share part of a scene:

“I won’t say too much, but there’s a particular sequence when I get very wet. And a few other people do, and hilarity ensued when it came to that. When you’re spending hours upon hours in a water tank with a bunch of people treading water, and you’ve got Styrofoam stuffed into every crevice of your costume to try and take the load off and because it’s 4am, it gets quite ridiculous.”

It’s not much, but something is better than nothing! I have no clue what could be happening here, but the styrofoam stuffed into costumes at 4am seems wild. It also shows the dedication these actors and actresses have.

Good Mix Of Old And New

While I enjoy the original Suicide Squad from an entertainment perspective, it clearly had its issues. Will Smith’s Deadshot will be missed, but there looks to be a good balance of what was successful in the last film with numerous new elements. Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney are all positive returns from the original film. Adding an extensive list of amazing actors and actresses seen below with a different take on the squad definitely is a major step moving forward.

Are you looking forward to The Suicide Squad? Do you think the changes will be beneficial or make the DCEU more of a hodgepodge like Justice League? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
