We know that famed Hollywood director James Cameron is somewhat of an explorer, having journeyed to the ocean floor while shooting a documentary for National Geographic. As it turns out, not long after the turn of the century, Cameron had an idea to shoot a film, not deep under water, but in outer space.
And who would be the perfect actor to take with him? Tom Cruise of course. Cruise is known for doing any stunts he can on his films, and over the last decade or so has garnered the reputation for being a little bit ‘out there’. Cameron recently spoke with Empire and talked about the idea of filming where no Hollywood director has filmed before.
“I actually talked to [Cruise] about doing a space film in space, about 15 years ago. I had a contract with the Russians in 2000 to go to the International Space Station and shoot a high-end 3D documentary there. And I thought, ‘S—, man, we should just make a feature.’ I said, ‘Tom, you and I, we’ll get two seats on the Soyuz, but somebody’s gotta train us as engineers.’ Tom said, ‘No problem, I’ll train as an engineer.’ We had some ideas for the story, but it was still conceptual.”

No what you think about Cruise, you have to admit the guy seems to be up for most anything, and if I can see anyone venturing into space to shoot a film, it’s Cruise and Cameron. Cruise recently starred in the latest entry to the popular Mission Impossible franchise and Cameron is currently busy filming the long awaited Avatar sequels, with the next installment due out in 2020.
