Writer/director James Cameron admits it has been a struggle to write his new Terminator movie in a recent interview. It was announced by Cameron last year that he was developing a mysterious new Terminator project for the first time since Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Cameron told CNN,
“I’ve been tasked with writing a new Terminator story. I’ve been unable to get [very far] on that… I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now.”
It’s not that surprising when you consider where we are with AI and other technologies right now. Do you just move slightly ahead, or really advanced? I guess the other issues Cameron has is that he likely will discard anything that came after T2, which he wasn’t involved in. Whilst I’m sure that will please the majority of fans it will present difficulties. As in, there may be some good ideas he’s forced to stay away from in all that mess.

Honestly, we don’t really know what to expect from this reboot. Speaking with THR last year, all Cameron would say is,
“It’s totally classified. I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it, even retroactively.”
As for Cameron he has another final Avatar film to helm after the one he’s currently working on. I’m not into the Avatar franchise, so I’m keen to see Cameron turn his attentions elsewhere. Point is, he has plenty of time, if he’s planning to direct this. If he’s writing a script with the intention of another director making it, the timescale may be shorter. However, I kinda get the feeling this is what Cameron will make post- Avatar.
What do you think of James Cameron’s struggles wiring a new Terminator movie? Would you like to see the franchise rebooted now it’s back in Cameron’s hands finally? Thoughts below.
