Talk show host James Corden is set to star alongside Melissa McCarthy, Variety reports. Well, sort of. Corden will actually be voicing the titular “super intelligence” in an action-comedy film Superintelligence.
Here’s how the outlet is describing the premise of the upcoming flick:
“McCarthy will play the lead role of Carol Peters, a former corporate executive whose earnest, yet unfulfilled, life is turned upside down when she is selected for observation by the world’s first superintelligence (Corden) — a form of artificial intelligence that may or may not take over the world.”
Admittedly, this sounds an awful lot like the Paul Feig-directed film, Spy, which Melissa McCarthy starred in as well (and a film that is probably one of my all-time favorite comedies), at least in terms of McCarthy’s character, who also lived a bit of an unfulfilling life before going on a spy mission. As such, I hope this A.I. aspect is something that really helps set it apart from everything else out there.
However, one piece of not-so-good news is that the script was written by Steve Mallory, whose only other feature film was the Melissa McCarthy vehicle The Boss, which didn’t do so well with critics (though it looks like it made a profit at the box office), so here’s hoping his sophomore effort is substantially better.
