James Gunn Didn’t Say He Was Finished With Marvel After Guardians 3 – But What Did He Say?

James Gunn statement, this time following online abuse aimed at Gunn and co-head of DCU Peter Saffran. Plus Gunn debunks another rumor

Following a recent rather cryptic message, we have some clarification, sort of. James Gunn didn’t say he was finished with Marvel after Guardians 3. However, at the same time just what did he mean with that recent message? Let’s start there shall we? Here is what Gunn posted to social media a few days ago.

CBR, along with plenty of other outlets covered this story as Gunn saying he is likely done with Marvel after Guardians 3. However Gunn corrected the outlet’s social media post below. The thing is, he didn’t really clarify much of why he posted that message to begin with?

Ok, so right now, Gunn has no plan to make any specific projects for Marvel or DC that he’s not already involved with. This would include GOTG3, The Holiday Special along with Peacemaker Season 2 and that other unnamed DC project he has on the go.

My reading of this, and I may be wrong, is that after the projects Gunn has planned with both Studios, he wants to work on some non comic book related projects for a bit. However after that, many years down the line, he’s not against working with either DC or Marvel again.

If that’s not what Gunn is saying, then I’m not sure what he is trying to say? Frankly, though I am loving Gunn’s work with both DC and Marvel, I am also ready to see what the filmmaker can do away from those studios. What that is, who knows, but that’s also kinda exciting as well. Perhaps after a break from supes he will get an idea that pulls him back into the fold? Whether with one or both of those studios. However he cannot spend his entire career in comic book movies. Well, I guess maybe he or anyone else could. Though, I’m not sure they’d want to?

James Gunn didn’t say he was finished with Marvel after Guardians 3. But, I think he did say not to expect anything new from him as he wants to tackle other projects after the ones he’s already deep into development on.

Thoughts below as always.
