James Gunn Hasn’t Had Talks With Mark Hamill About A Role In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

A year or so ago, we started to hear some rumor that Mark Hamill might be in line for a role in the upcoming trilogy capper Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This began when Mark Hamill revealed that he had James Gunn over for a barbeque as they live close to one another. Hamill jokingly said that he was keen for a role in the Marvel movie at the time and from there, tongues began to wag.

It is thought that the main antagonist for Guardians 3 will be The High Evolutionary and fans began to suggest that Hamill could possibly be cast in that role. Now, not to say this will not happen, James Gunn recently was asked about this on an Instagram Q&A. Whilst I didn’t catch the Q&A, the folks over at ComicBook.com did and here is what Gunn had to say.

“Mark is my friend. We have never had these talks you speak of.”

This, of course, doesn’t mean Mark Hamill will definitely not be in Guardians 3, it just means that Hamill and Gunn have not talked about it, or if they have, they do not wish that to be known as yet. Gunn is currently deep into filming in The Suicide Squad and as yet, we still don’t have a release date for Guardians 3, though we do expect it to be sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.

Here is what Hamill actually said when he was talking to Collider previously in a story we covered at the time.

“Marilou and I had him down for a barbeque and we didn’t talk about the movie. We talked about living in Malibu and our relatives and pets. It never really came up. But that’s the way it should be. I didn’t want to strong arm him, in any way. So, I like the movies, they’re fun, but I’m happy to be in the audience. There’s a lot less pressure. That’s why I liked Solo and Rogue One so much. There was 100 percent less Hamill so I didn’t have any sort of anxiety. I could just be in the audience, it was great.”

You can see that he never directly said, or even suggested anything other than having Gunn over for a meal. However, you know how this game works, so fans out two and two together and come up with ‘Mark Hamill to play High Evolutionary in best friend James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.’ It just doesn’t actually make that true in any way, just as it was not true at the time. Would I be surprised if Hamill did get a part in the movie, no, because he’s a great actor and can pull off something interesting, it really depends what kind of roles Gunn is introducing and whether he feels like there is a place for Hamill in this one, which there is no guarantee of.

What do you think of Gunn’s comments, would you like Gunn to find a way to get Hamill into Guardians 3, or are you not bothered either way? Leave them below if you got them as always.
