James Gunn In Talks To Direct The Suicide Squad — Is It A Sequel Or A Reboot?

This comes as no real surprise to any of us, let’s be honest. After being sacked by Disney and the fate of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently up in the air, writer/director James Gunn was working on a new script for a Suicide Squad movie for DC. Of course, whilst it was never said, we all assumed that eventually, Gunn would also land the director gig on this movie.

Low and behold a report from THR states that Gunn is indeed in talks to direct the script he has written for the next Suicide Squad movie. One would imagine those talks will progress well and I think we can pretty much say, that barring some drastic differences of opinion, Gunn will write and direct the movie for WB/DC.

The report from THR also goes on to talk about whether this is a sequel to Suicide Squad or a complete reboot of the franchise? Well, the movie is currently being titled The Suicide Squad and is being positioned not as a sequel, but as a relaunch of the franchise. The original movie featured many traditional Suicide Squad characters such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc etc along with a semi-antagonist appearance form Jared Leto’s Joker. The outlet’s sources say that Gunn’s movie will take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new set of characters and actors. Their sources also say this project is very much rooted within Gunn’s normal vibe.

I despised the original Suicide Squad movie, to the point I don’t think I could sit through it a second time. It simply gave me no enjoyment and I’m 100% convinced that James Gunn can deliver a better film than that even on an off day. It’s going to be interesting to watch this movie develop, see who will be cast and in what roles. Having Gunn writing and directing this instantly elevates it to my most anticipated DC movie yet. I guess we will share any further news we find as it happens, so watch this space.

The Suicide Squad will be produced by Charles Roven and Peter Safran and exec produced by Zack and Deborah Snyder. WB has scheduled the movie for an August 2021 release, which should give plenty of time to develop this fully.
