DC Studios boss James Gunn comments on finding out author GRRM was behind the Salvation idea used in Peacemaker Season 2. Gunn also goes on to cite GRRM’s (George R. R. Martin) A Song of Ice and Fire books as one of his main inspirations for the DCU.

Gunn appeared on the podcast below, and talk was more focused on the recently ended Peacemaker Season 2 finale. However, he did mention that he had just finished a new draft of Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. Explaining that while the ending of Peacemaker Season 2 does play a part in Man of Tomorrow, it’s also it’s own separate story.

Gunn also commented on him finding out that A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R. R. Martin was one of the minds (alongside John Jos) responsible for the idea of the Salvation prison used in Peacemaker. Martin was in the team that came up with initially an Elseworlds story. The idea was that Meta Human criminals were sent to a planet with no way back. His initial story would have seen them truly stuck there forever and turning eventually into a society. In one of his Not a Blog’s Martin compared the idea to Australia, initially used as a penal colony by the British and went on to become it’s own Nation.

In the end the idea was changed to become part of the main DC comic Universe and it became the ‘Salvation Run’ series. Gunn was not aware of the connection initially he explains, and was excited when he found out.

Gunn also went on to cite GRRM’s books as a major inspiration for how Gunn envisions his DCU franchise. The filmmaker did not go into specific details, but he has cited A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) as an influence on his plans previously.
