James Gunn is currently filming The Suicide Squad for DC, then as far as we know he will be stepping back to Marvel to finish Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though no release date for that movie has yet been set.
Gunn recently answered some questions on Instagram and he revealed which Guardian he thinks could get a solo movie, and also revealed that he was not unhappy with the choices made for Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, namely her death and return as an earlier version.
Gunn revealed that Drax the Destroyer would be his top choice for a solo outing, and it’s easy to see why. The character has a lot of potential that could be further explored outside of the Guardians movies. Especially now that for him, Thanos is dead and therefore he has avenged his wife and child. Gunn also talked about Gamora and said he was fine with the decision because he was consulted beforehand.
We know the Russos didn’t consult with Gunn directly, though they assumed Kevin Feige had done so before they were given the go-ahead. It looks like that must be the way it went down based on Gunn’s comments.

The Suicide Squad is due for release on August 6th, 2021, and we expect Gunn to move straight onto Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after completion of the movie. If I had to guess, I would say Guardians 3 would be out as part of Phase 5 some time in late 2022 or early 2023. It also looks like this is the final Guardians movies based on Gunn’s previous comments that he has “one more” Guardians film left to make.
