San Diego Comic-Con last year had many memorable moments, but there are few that stick out to me as much as when one of our writers casually threw out there that James Gunn had just been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. There was no warning, and given that they were close to finishing the script, it seemed like quite the unfortunate move from the studio.
In the time since then, James Gunn has been hired by Warner Bros. to tackle The Suicide Squad, a soft reboot/sequel of the franchise that was kicked off by David Ayer back in 2016, and he’s also been rehired by Disney to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3…but how does he feel about his work on The Suicide Squad? Speaking with Deadline, writer-director James Gunn seems to be quite taken with the process so far.
“The Suicide Squad sequel, it just instantly started flowing. I don’t think I’ve had as much fun writing a script since maybe Dawn of the Dead. That’s what this whole movie has been like.”

There’s nothing more exciting than when you hear how much fun a filmmaker or writer is having on their latest project, and given how much of himself Gunn puts into these films, I feel like The Suicide Squad will be an entertaining ride — though I can’t help but wonder if we’ll be getting soft, heartfelt Gunn or dark and edgy Gunn for this one, especially since he cites Dawn of the Dead.
