Holy hell, ladies and gents! This is not a drill! James Gunn has been reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3! As reported by Deadline, he will be back in the saddle, even after having been sacked since July of 2018. After it being the talk of the town for months, things seemed to have petered out. But how did this go about?
Apparently, while many of us thought this movie had been put on backburner (it was originally supposed to begin production at the beginning of this year), we were dead wrong. Insiders are telling THR that around mid-fall of last year, Marvel and Disney went back to Gunn and made a deal…so all this time while it sounded like Gunn had switched over to DC, he’d been working on both the entire time.

All this drama originally began last July when some old tweets surfaced from the filmmaker, where he made inappropriate jokes that included subjects like pedophilia. Gunn originally apologized, saying:
“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time”
But the firing at the time still stood, and in the weeks that followed, many came to speak on Gunn’s behalf. It’s unclear why Gunn has been reinstated, but it’s interesting news nonetheless.
