James Gunn Says Avengers 4 Is NOT Titled Infinity Guantlet

Avengers 4 already has an interesting history, two years out from release. It was initially announced with the rest of Phase 3 as Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, complete with a logo, but was later changed to the working title of Avengers 4. Even after the title change, Marvel Studios announced that directors Anthony and Joe Russo were shooting Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 simultaneously, like the Back to the Future or Matrix sequels. This also is no longer the case, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige changing his tone last week, saying instead they will do one right after the other. Feige also revealed the title to Avengers 4 is being kept under wraps as it could prove to be a spoiler for Infinity War

Even more recently, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2  actress Zoe Saldana referred to Avengers 4 as “Gauntlet,” the obvious continuation of Infinity War into the even more popular comic title Infinity Gauntlet. Now, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, James Gunn, is here to clear up that rumor, as he told Yahoo Movies:

“It’s not the title… My guess is that Zoe just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoe today, but I would imagine that is just Zoe misspeaking and saying ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ instead of ‘Infinity War’.”

James Gunn has been very open on Twitter about not lying to fans. Yes, he’ll keep details from fans and often not comment on something, as he should as a Marvel director, but Gunn has given us his word that he won’t pull a J.J. Abrams and flat-out lie. You know, the whole, swearing Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness deal… James Gunn said he would never do that to us. So, if Gunn is still true to his word — and not being held at gunpoint by Feige — he wouldn’t have said, “It’s not the title,” if Infinity Gauntlet is,  indeed, the title. As much as Infinity Gauntlet makes sense as a title, I (currently) believe in James Gunn.

Do you buy his answer? The fact he says he’ll speak to Zoe “today” is a bit ominous, but would James Gunn really lie to us? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
