In a recent interview/podcast appearance, DCU boss James Gunn talks about the changing DCU plan and what matters most to him with Batman. Appearing on YMH Gunn talked about lots of subjects including what has happened to comedy movies and even Star Wars. However, later he did get onto his chief concern right now, which is the DCU.

Timestamp you are looking for here is the one that says ‘Batman’ folks. Or, read on for a transcript of most important comments.

Gunn spoke about how the initial idea for the ‘story’ of the DCU was created. Though, also how that must remain a loose plan and has already changed since they began.

James Gunn Transcript

“When we first took over, I had written up what the first shows were supposed to be and then where the story eventually went. So we met with David Szaslav, who was the one that hired us, and we told him what the basic plan was.”

“He was into that and we got hired. He was the only one that knew the plan but then we told Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdi and they were into it, and we also told Casey Bloys- who’s the head of HBO.”

“So we had a basic plan and then we hired a bunch of writers who I really respected, who came in and we kind of worked out the whole story. Now some things have changed since then for various reasons but the basic thrust of the big story is the same- that is, what started in Superman, continues in Peacemaker Season 2 and then continues in the next Superman movie [Man of Tomorrow], and then will continue in the movie after that, and then after that. So there was always this bigger plan that we came up with.”

“It’s like a decade, maybe a little less. It’s very loose too. You have to be careful because there were certain projects that were part of that plan- because my other rule is that I’m not going to greenlight anything without having a screenplay that I love. And there were other things that haven’t worked yet. You have to be able and willing to have the big picture in mind but also be able to shift anytime you need to. So the pinpoints are the same but some of the specifics have changed.”

Talk also turned to Batman specifically, who has still to make his DCU debut. See related post above for more details on how that movie is developing.

Gunn was asked whether the DCU Batman would have a grey and blue suit, or would have white eyes? This made Gunn laugh as he’s someone who speaks to fans on social media. Therefore, he’s heard all this before and points out there is no right or wrong answer. It’s all opinions, no one universally agrees. However, to Gunn, that’s not what’s important about adapting Batman.

“None of those things are important to me,” he said. “What matters is the character and the story and I think we have a really really good story now for what’s happening with Batman.”

He’s right you know. Maybe one day you get a Batman looking exactly like you imagine him to be. However, if it’s not a good story and therefore not a good film, you’ll hate it anyway.

Though Gunn did talk briefly about what attracts him to the character of Batman. Gunn says he loves the detective side, but equally so the brute fighter side. He even talked about certain issues that inspired him as a kid. Ones where the darker, supernatural elements were added to the mix.
