Guardians of the Galaxy made us all believe a raccoon could talk. Many of us may have made fun of the idea of a talking raccoon before that film hit theaters several years back, but audiences were quickly won over by the character brought to life by the trifecta of James Gunn (writer/director), Sean Gunn (motion performer), and Bradley Cooper (the voice actor), and what we’ve gotten over the course of four films is a fully realized, three-dimensional character.
Surprisingly enough, Rocket is the one Guardian who’s gotten the most screen time out of anyone else. He got to hang around with Thor for both Avengers: Infinity War and in Avengers: Endgame, essentially becoming a member of the Avengers in the process (well, him and Nebula, I guess). But as much screen time as he’s had, he’s apparently not done growing, as Gunn recently teased in an interview with Deadline.
“I relate to Rocket and I feel compassion for Rocket, but I also feel like his story has not been completed. He has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through Infinity War and Endgame, and then I was set to really finish that arc in Guardians 3. That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story—though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.”

The quote is given in the context of him going through the mourning process of when he found out he was fired last year. Since then, he’s been hired back on the film, so he will definitely get to see that character arc to fruition, which is great to hear.
