James Gunn Was Interested In Batman If Not For Matt Reeves Movie

James Gunn was interested in Batman

James Gunn was interested in Batman when he was first approached by WB to make a DC movie. However, at that time, Matt Reeves was already beginning to develop The Batman.  The scripting stage of The Batman had already taken some time to come together. DC execs actually wanted Gunn on a Superman project. However as the director said recently when speaking on Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, he just didn’t connect with the character.

“I’m not saying I’d never be interested in Superman, but if it was Batman, which Matt [Reeves] was already doing, it might’ve felt differently because I understand Batman. I understand Harley Quinn; I don’t understand every character.”

It’s fair, I’m not sure Gunn is right for Superman. However, I’m also not sure Gunn is right for a Batman movie and I say this as a fan of Gunn’s work. I like my Batman dark and gritty. Ergo, The Dark Knight trilogy is my current favorite live-action Batman. However I am keen to explore The Batman which looks to have it’s own, but still dark and gritty thing going on.

If Gunn was going to get into Superman, he’d have taken things in his own unique direction.

“I considered doing a Krypto movie which I thought would be really fun, but that shows you where my head’s at,” he explained. “I wasn’t interested in doing a [traditional] Superman thing—a superpowered dog from Krypton, running around a city, destroying it, while Superman tries to track him down and get him. That seemed interesting to me.”

Again, much as I love that weird approach for Guardians and The Suicide Squad. I’m not sure that’s the Superman movie anyone wants to see, certainly not me. Not yet anyway.

So James Gunn was interested in Batman! Does anyone think Gunn would be the right choice for a Batman movie? Sound off below as always.
