James Mangold says he is not interested in Helena Shaw Indy spin-off however, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy won’t rule it out. Mangold directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which hits theatres this July. It was Mangold and his writing partners that created the character of Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However when speaking with Variety recently, Mangold immediately ruled himself out of any Helena Shaw spin-offs.
I ask if he has talked with Disney and Lucasfilm about the potential for Waller-Bridge to carry on the franchise. Mangold smiles and waves his hand dismissively.
“I’m not interested,” he says. “I refuse. I just can’t do it.” He gestures to the rules hovering just over his shoulder. “The amount of lore and Easter eggs and fan service starts to become antithetical to any of this stuff at a certain point. It isn’t storytelling anymore. It’s large-scale advertising.”
However, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy would be the one to decide if this ever happens and she appears to be against ruling it out. She does however stress that this is not something they are planning right now.
(For her part, Kennedy says that while it’s “entirely possible” that a Helena Shaw movie could happen, “we’re not having any of those conversations right now. We’re just focused on finishing this with Harrison.”)
That’s kinda not what she said in the related section below?

Obviously I’ve not seen Dial Of Destiny yet, therefore I can’t comment too much on Shaw as a character. However, if anyone was going to carry on in some kind of spin-off I think Shortround (Ke Huy Quan) would be the far more popular choice. Though If I’m honest, I really don’t see any future for the franchise outside of Indiana Jones himself. The character himself is the most important part of the franchise and I just don’t think any kind of spin-off’s would be a good idea.
Money talks though, and my guess is Disney won’t allow this franchise to just fade away with Ford. Get it wrong though, and they put the final nail in the coffin themselves.
