James Wan Shares A Photo Of The Queen Of Atlantis

As a fan of DC Comics this year is pretty exciting. We are a few weeks away from Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman and a couple of months away from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If that wasn’t enough, we know that James Wan is currently filming Aquaman starring Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman and Patrick Wilson. A few weeks ago Warner Bros. Pictures released the Justice League trailer where we got a really good look at the King of Atlantis, and a brief glimpse of Queen Mera. Although there had already been an image of Mera released earlier, yesterday Wan treated us to our first look at “Lady” Mera on set via his Twitter

Check out the image below.

Immediately the first thing I notice is how different the outfits are in the two photos that have been revealed, this one seems a bit more like the comics, even including the Aquaman’s symbol. Just a little history on Mera, she first appeared in Aquaman #11 in September of 1963 as the queen of the sea. She was created by Jack Miller and Nick Cardy. She is the former queen of Dimension Aqua or Xebel as some know it. She is usually known as Aquaman’s wife and Queen of Atlantis, although in the current Rebirth series, they are not married yet. Mera has the ability to form “hard water” objects, or water bend for the lack of a better term. As a Xebel she was trained as a killer, so she has formidable fighting skills and super strength (due to living underwater).

Although Amber Herd looks great as Mera. I will be very critical about the way she is portrayed. Throughout the New 52 and Rebirth series it is easy to see how important she is to Aquaman. As a man split between two worlds, Aquaman sometimes doubts himself and his abilities. In the comic books we have seen countless times where Mera does a fantastic job at having his back emotionally and in battle. This is something that I really hope they get right in the film because for me at least it is a very important part of Aquaman’s character.

As they continue to shoot, no doubt we will get more images and clips to get the buzz going. I am looking forward to seeing how Wan and the crew bring the under water world of Atlantis to life. What do you think of the new image of Mera?

Aquaman dives into theaters December 21st, 2018.
