You can tell a lot about how a studio feels about their movie based on the categories they select them for. On a few occasions, Disney Animation and Pixar have expanded out of the Best Animated Film category for the Academy Awards. They’ve never won in those categories, but given that they think they could succeed outside of it, it really shows something.

The same could now be said of the upcoming film Weathering With You. The film comes from filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, who is best known for his work on the sci-fi romance animated film Your Name, which broke all sorts of records at the box office and went on to become one of the most successful anime films of all time.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder Japan is opting to submit the film for Best International Feature Film for the 2020 Oscars. That’s right, rather than submit it for Best Animated Film, it’s going up against other international, live-action fare. 

Perhaps with a little bit of luck, this film can surpass the success of its predecessor even. After all, it does seem to be bringing in a lot of those same elements that Your Name had. Below is the official synopsis:

“The summer of his high school freshman year, Hokoda runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hokoda meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong­willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…”
