Jared Leto Apparently Isn’t Too Happy About DC’s Plans For Multiple Jokers

While the current DC Extended Universe has just recently become stable thanks to the success of Wonder Woman, the studio announced last week that an origin story for one of their most iconic characters, the Joker, is in the works. The film will not feature Jared Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime, and will be the first under DC’s new banner which will produce films that exist outside the current DC Extended Universe. The new universe is said to explore unusual versions of DC’s characters and with that, it is thought that directors and screenwriters will have more freedom under this new banner than the with the current DCEU.

According to insider sources as reported by THR, the current Joker, played by Jared Leto, was apparently surprised by the news of DC’s new plans and was said to not be happy about the idea of multiple Jokers. He reportedly let his dissatisfaction be known to his agents. Leto is still set to reprise his role as the iconic character in two upcoming DC films, Suicide Squad 2 and a spinoff with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

One critique of DC’s new plans is the potential to confuse moviegoers with multiple versions of the same character. This might not sound like a big deal for fans like us, who stay current with the world of cinema, but for casual visitors to the theaters, this has potential to be a problem. I am all for the new route DC plans to take with their properties, I am interested to see how much freedom the studio will give each director, and I think allowing visions to be carried out may produce some memorable films.

To be honest, I have never fully been on board with Leto’s Joker. I enjoy the actor in films, and have nothing against his portrayal of the character, I think he plays the part well, it’s the look of this Joker that I never really liked. I could be in the minority here, but I really don’t know what DC was thinking with the appearance of this version of the character. Leto’s Joker looks like a long lost member of the Insane Clown Posse. As for the origin story film, Todd Phillips is currently (The Hangover films, War Dogs) set to write and direct the new Joker film, and believe it or not Martin Scorsese is listed among the producers, although according to sources, his deal isn’t finalized.
