Jason Statham’s latest film, The Meg, in which he will battle a giant prehistoric shark, hits theaters this weekend. While the name Statham is pretty much synonymous with action star, in an interview with Collider, the actor was asked if working behind the camera as a director is something that might be in his future. Here’s what he had to say.
“Not at this time. As the body wears out I’d like to not … I love the whole process of being on a movie set and the collaboration and that. I’ve got friends that are doing amazing work now. I’ve spent a lot of years with Chad Stahelski and Dave Leach over at 87Eleven. I love working with the stunt guys. Action movies for me are my favorite thing. If I ever did take on the role of a director it would certainly be with a small budget sort of action movie that I’d like to do. Who knows? It’s a long road. Right now I’m still in a good spot but you never know. Never say never.”

Statham, who is now 51, can’t do the action thing forever, at least not in front of the camera, but as he mentioned above he’s still good at the moment and seems open-minded about possibly directing a film somewhere down the road. Until the time comes that Statham decides he wants to pick up the old clapperboard, fans can be content knowing he will continue to bring the action in front of the camera for the foreseeable future.
