For some time, it’s been understood that Jennifer Lawrence was nearing the end of her run as Mystique in the X-MEN movies. Having made her debut in the role in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, she then reprised it in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, and is set to play her once again in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. This journey began for her in 2011, before she became a household name and an Academy Award-winner. She’s also anchored her own blockbuster franchise, THE HUNGER GAMES, in that time. With her three-picture X-MEN deal now complete, the thought is that she’d bow out from future installments. The actress, herself, has even said as much in the past.
But now, with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE around the corner, Lawrence seems to have changed her tune…
Empire Magazine asked her, flat out, if she’d want to do another X-MEN and here’s what she said:
“I am dying to come back. I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
Of course, the actress could be having some fun at our expense. She’s known for being very clever and tongue-in-cheek with her remarks to the press, and starting her response with the words “I am dying” might be a veiled reference to her character being killed off, meaning there’s no chance she will come back. After all, Mystique did seem to be in a bit of peril in the latest X-MEN: APOCALYPSE trailer, and one way to deal with her contract expiring is to make her character…well…expire, too.
We’ll just have to wait and see, when X-MEN: APOCALYPSE comes out on May 27.
